ASIS School Security Standard
This Standard establishes a comprehensive framework for developing, implementing, and maintaining a school security program across K–12 educational environments. It provides structured guidance to help schools assess risks, design protective strategies, and integrate physical security, behavioral threat assessment and management, and emergency operations planning into a cohesive and sustainable program.
This Standard emphasizes the importance of leadership commitment, multidisciplinary collaboration, and continuous improvement in building a culture of safety. It outlines foundational principles such as risk-based planning, stakeholder engagement, and compliance with legal and regulatory obligations. The guidance supports schools in aligning their security efforts with their educational mission while ensuring that protective measures are both effective and contextually appropriate.
This Standard details the essential components of a school security program, including governance, resource allocation, training and awareness, communication protocols, and documentation practices. It also provides operational guidance for implementing physical protection systems, conducting behavioral threat assessments, and preparing for emergency response and recovery. A lifecycle approach is applied to ensure that security systems remain resilient, adaptable, and aligned with evolving threats and community needs.
